That Girona is one of the world capitals of cycling is no secret—and we’re certainly not breaking the news here. Just take a look at the number of professional riders training around the city and you’ll quickly see why Girona ticks every box as a cyclist’s paradise: mild weather, a strategic location, an incredible variety of routes, and a thriving network of bike shops and cycling cafés that have helped build a strong, vibrant community.
And when it comes to mountain biking, the miles and miles of forest mean the trails are virtually endless. Below, we’ve selected three of the most popular—and most fun—MTB routes in the area.
1. Sant Grau Sanctuary
We’ll start with one of the most popular routes from Girona—a true classic among MTB riders looking for an adventurous ride that blends nature, stunning views, and a moderate physical challenge.
The Santuari de Sant Grau, near Sant Gregori, is set in a privileged natural environment filled with forest tracks and trails winding through Mediterranean woodland, farmland, and hilly terrain. It’s especially appreciated for its proximity to Girona and its varied landscapes, ranging from gentle stretches to more demanding climbs.
Route Details
· Distance: Approximately 30 km (round trip)
· Difficulty: Moderate
· Elevation gain: Around 700 metres
· Starting point: Girona (usually from the city centre)
· Highlights: Sant Grau Sanctuary, panoramic views over Girona and the Llémena Valley, natural surroundings near the Gavarres
Route Description
1. Leaving Girona
The route begins in Girona’s city centre, heading west towards Sant Gregori, a small village about 7 km away. The first section follows wide paved and gravel paths over gently rolling terrain—perfect for warming up before the real climbing begins. It’s an ideal introduction that allows you to find your rhythm.
2. Trails and Forests of Sant Gregori
As you approach Sant Gregori, farmland gradually gives way to pine, oak and holm oak forests typical of the region. From here, the route becomes more demanding, entering forest tracks with gravel and dirt sections. Although generally in good condition, some areas feature loose stones and roots, so staying alert is essential.
This section is particularly enjoyable, combining steady climbs with smoother stretches through shaded woodland—perfect spots to catch your breath.
3. The Climb to Sant Grau
After passing Sant Gregori, the main ascent begins: the climb up to Sant Grau. While not brutally steep, it features sustained gradients that can feel long if you’re not prepared. The elevation gain isn’t extreme, but the effort is constant, so maintaining a steady, comfortable pace is key.
The climb follows wide tracks, though some narrower sections include technical features such as rocks and tight bends that test your handling skills.
The sanctuary itself, sitting at around 300 metres above sea level, is the route’s iconic highlight. This small 18th-century hermitage is surrounded by forest and offers breathtaking views over the Llémena Valley and beyond. On clear days, you can even spot the Pyrenees and much of the Girona plain. It’s the perfect place to pause, refuel, and soak in the scenery.
4. Return to Girona
After enjoying the views, the return ride is faster and more playful. Much of the route back—especially from Sant Grau to Sant Gregori—is downhill, with flowing forest tracks that let you pick up speed. While less physically demanding than the climb, technical sections still require focus.
As you approach Girona, the terrain flattens out again, easing you smoothly back into the city.
Who Is It For?
This route is ideal for intermediate MTB riders who want a solid workout combined with stunning natural surroundings. With rewarding climbs, varied terrain, and spectacular views, it’s perfect for a half-day adventure—whether you’re training or simply exploring the area.
2. Dragon Khan and Spiderman
No, we’re not talking about a theme park—but we promise this ride is just as thrilling. This is one of the most iconic and demanding MTB routes around Santa Coloma de Farners, known for its combination of technical sections, steep climbs, and adrenaline-pumping descents.
Particularly famous for the “Dragon Khan” and “Spiderman” segments, this route is a true physical and technical challenge.
Route Details
· Distance: Around 32–35 km (depending on starting point)
· Difficulty: High (especially technical)
· Elevation gain: Approx. 1,200 metres
· Starting point: Santa Coloma de Farners
· Terrain: Narrow singletrack, forest trails, technical descents
Route Description
Dragon Khan Section
The “Dragon Khan” segment—named after the legendary roller coaster—is undoubtedly one of the most iconic parts of the ride. It consists of a series of highly technical descents and tight switchbacks that seriously test your bike-handling skills.
With steep gradients, rocks, roots, and sharp corners, this section is exhilarating but requires advanced technical ability. The speed, constant decision-making, and flow create a roller-coaster-like adrenaline rush.
Spiderman Section
“Spiderman” is another standout segment. It includes a tough climb, but the name actually refers to the descent that follows—a section where riders must move with agility and precision, almost like the superhero himself.
Expect technical terrain packed with trees, rocks, irregular surfaces, tight turns, and steep ramps. At times, it feels like you have to “stick” to the rocks to stay in control. It’s one of the most demanding yet rewarding parts of the route.
Who Is It For?
This route is not suitable for beginners. It’s designed for advanced or highly experienced riders seeking a serious challenge both physically and technically. The climbs are long and punishing, and the descents demand excellent bike control.
Less experienced riders may find it overwhelming—but for skilled MTB enthusiasts, it’s pure fun.
3. Els Àngels Sanctuary
We finish with another iconic ride: the MTB route from Girona to the Santuari dels Àngels. Located in the heart of the Massís de les Gavarres, this mountain is renowned not only for its natural beauty but also for its historical significance—it’s where Salvador Dalí got married.
The route strikes a perfect balance between physical challenge and scenic reward, offering breathtaking views over Girona, the Costa Brava, and the Pyrenees.
Route Details
· Distance: Approximately 30 km (round trip)
· Difficulty: Moderate to high
· Elevation gain: Around 600 metres
· Starting point: Girona city
· Highlights: Els Àngels Sanctuary, views over the Gavarres, Girona, and the Mediterranean
Route Description
1. Leaving Girona
The ride begins in Girona’s city centre, heading east towards the Gavarres. The first few kilometres are relatively easy, with wide tracks and gentle terrain—ideal for warming up. You’ll pass through semi-urban and agricultural areas before gradually gaining elevation as the mountains draw closer.
2. The Ascent to Els Àngels
The climb is gradual but steady, stretching around 10–12 km with an average gradient of 6–7%, and a few steeper ramps along the way. The track is mostly wide and rideable, though certain rocky and root-filled sections require solid technique.
This climb is well known among local cyclists for both its beauty and its challenge. As you ascend, the views open up spectacularly—revealing Girona, its surrounding countryside, and, on clear days, even the Mediterranean shimmering on the horizon.
Both road cyclists and MTB riders frequent this climb, though the MTB version follows forest tracks that offer a more immersive nature experience.
3. Arrival at Els Àngels
At 485 metres above sea level, the sanctuary marks the high point of the route. This 15th-century hermitage boasts stunning panoramic views. It’s an ideal spot to rest, refuel, and take in the landscape. There’s also a restaurant and café—perfect before starting the descent.
From here, you can see the Pyrenees, Girona, the Empordà plain, and even the Costa Brava. The physical effort is more than rewarded by the scenery.
4. Return to Girona
You can return via the same route or explore alternative tracks across the Gavarres. The descent is fast and enjoyable, with a few technical sections to keep you focused. Watch out for loose stones and tight corners, but overall it’s a flowing and satisfying ride.
More experienced riders can branch off onto additional technical singletrack—but it’s advisable to be well-informed or use GPS, as the Gavarres trail network is extensive and easy to get lost in.
Who Is It For?
This route is considered moderate to challenging, mainly due to the sustained climb. While demanding in parts, the terrain is largely rideable, with few extremely technical sections.
The MTB ride to Els Àngels from Girona is a must for any cyclist visiting the area. With its steady but rewarding ascent, spectacular views, and flowing descent, it offers the perfect mix of physical effort and scenic enjoyment. Whether you’re an experienced rider or an ambitious intermediate, it’s an ideal way to spend a morning or afternoon immersed in nature.
